From the scoring system of Sutton exams to the tips and strategies for maximising your marks, everything is mentioned below.

Let’s not waste time and get started.

The Basics of Sutton Exams

Sutton (SET) is like a pass to gain entry into one of the top grammar schools and other selective schools. These exams are designed by experts to examine the academic ability of students. If your child is preparing for it then he/she must already have a desired school in mind. So, failing this exam is not even an option. That is why it’s important to understand this exam along with the scoring system of it.

This exam is entirely based on two subjects: English and Mathematics.

Parts of the Sutton Exam

Mathematics

The Mathematics test has around 50 multiple-choice questions.  Here’s a quick overview of the topics that are included:

  • Arithmetic: Basic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as properties of numbers, decimals, and the order of operations (BIDMAS).
  • Algebra: Simple linear equations.
  • Fractions and Percentages: Working with parts of whole numbers and percentages.
  • Measurements: Converting units, and calculating area and volume.
  • Graphs: Understanding Venn diagrams, line graphs, pie charts, and pictograms.
  • Statistics: Mean, median, mode, and range.
  • Geometry: Understanding 2D shapes, angles, and coordinates.
  • Word Problems: Solving maths problems described in words.

English

The English test is divided into these sections:

  • Spelling: Testing the ability to spell words correctly.
  • Comprehension on Text A: Understanding and interpreting a passage of text.
  • Comprehension on Text B: Another passage to test comprehension skills.
  • Comprehension Comparison on Texts A and B: Comparing and contrasting the two passages.

These comprehension questions will test your child’s ability to understand the passages, make inferences, recognise the writer’s style and tone, and understand literary devices, vocabulary, and grammar.

Second-Stage Test

As the first stage test includes MCQs, the second stage test doesn’t have that. They consist of two subjects, Maths and English but with detailed questions.

English: 1 hour – Extended writing tasks.

Maths: 45 minutes – This will be almost the same as the first stage but with more challenging exercises.

Let’s break things down and understand how exactly the exam is scored.

The Scoring System

The scoring system of Sutton exam is decided to be fair to everyone. Here is an overview for you:

Standardised score

The aveage raw score is set to 100 for each exam to ensure fairness among the different age groups.

Scores are adjusted to select the top third of students to move to the second round. The exact raw score needed depends on overall performance. Students who pass the first stage exam get invited to the second stage which includes more detailed questions.

Previous Year Data

Girls: Around 1070 girls from 2630 who gave the SET were invited to the second round. The average pass mark was 209.

As per the information, over 2700 girls registered for the Sutton exam this year.

Boys: Over 3000 boys took the test last year. About 1000 were invited to the second round. The average pass mark was 218.5.

Note that this information is entirely based on the research.
